Gas or Electric Water Heater? What is best for me?

As hard as it seems to choose a water heater, especially when you don't really know or care about that matter, Klugit is here to assist you in order to find the perfect device that will meet your and your house's needs.

Before going through the differences between the two main water heating methods - gas or electric- there are a few questions that you should think about:
  • What type of installation and/or restrictions do your house presents?
  • There are moments/hours of the day when your hot water consumption is far higher?
  • How many people live at the house?
  • Do you want instant hot water?
  • Are there any extra components or features that you would like to experience? Like distance control?
After considering all the needs and/or restrictions of your household, let’s start by talking about Gas water heaters. These are usually chosen because :

✔️ There are different dimensions and designs - better selection to choose what suits your house the best;
✔️ Allows you to control the gas consumption in the house;
✔️ Endless hot water.

On the other hand, some difficulties experienced by Gas water heaters consumers are:

❌ There isn’t hot water since the first second that you open the tap - You have to wait a moment until the gas takes effect;
❌ When the weather is cold, the gas takes longer to rise which means the water will take even longer to heat up.

Electric water heaters can suppress some of the issues on one hand:

✔️ There is hot water since the first second - this allows you to save water by not wasting it;
✔️ It disposes of a good hot water storage, enough for numerous tasks;
✔️No gas in the house needed, nor fixed tariffs associated with it;
✔️ Cheaper investment and simpler installation.

On the other hand, they face some difficulties:

❌ The fact that the tank takes up a certain space - depending on how many people there are in the house and their water needs, the tank can be bigger or smaller;
❌ When empty (without hot water), they take quiet some time to heat up again (from 1h up to 5h);
❌They waste energy through standby thermal losses. Find out more here and how to overcome it.

Now talking numbers.

The consumption of these two water heater methods is where you can’t detect some significant differences.

By choosing a Gas water heater, you can save up some money, due to their main source of energy being gas.
Therefore the monthly energy consumption revolves around 150 to 250 kWh, so the main expense is the price of the gas bottle, that can cost you between 15€ to 30€ a month, depending if you need 1 or 2 bottles.

On the other hand, by depending fully on electricity, the Electric water heaters can consume up to 2800 kWh per month (in a house of 3 / 4 people), which can cost you up to 94€ (depending on the electricity fee).

To sum up...What is the best option?
It depends! It depends on your needs, your houses requirements and demands and what you are willing to pay and abdicate.
But in general, Gas water heaters are more suitable for hot weather locations where your hot water needs are lower and only advised for households with a maximum of 3 / 4 people.
If hot water is something more present and needed in your daily life and/or if you live in a more cold weather place, the Electric water heater will be the most appropriate option for you.
